The decline of quality craftsmanship and true carpentry.

Published by Don Hester on

A little poem to all the Carpenters

In haste and greed, craftsmanship is lost,

Buildings crumble, Structures tossed.

The Carpenter’s hand, with carelessness,

Poorly cuts and hammers, a dwelling’s mess.

The decline of quality craftsmanship in newer homes is a growing concern among homeowners and industry experts. In the past, homes were built to last, with attention to detail and a focus on durability. However, in recent years, there has been a shift towards cheaper and quicker construction methods and materials, resulting in homes that are less sturdy and less able to withstand the test of time along with greater maintenance costs.

One of the main reasons for this decline in quality is the need for increased speed and lack of properly trained and knowledgeable contractors in home construction. While this can be efficient and cost-effective, they often result in homes that are lacking in character and attention to detail. For example, many newer homes feature drywall that is poorly finished, with visible seams and uneven textures. Similarly, cabinetry and trim work is often poorly aligned, with gaps and uneven surfaces. As you can see in this example the countertop base is not square.

Another reason for the decline in quality is the use of cheaper materials. In the past, homes were built with materials like solid wood, brick, and stone, which were durable and long-lasting. However, today, many builders use cheaper alternatives like engineered wood, vinyl siding, and other synthetic materials. Many of these  materials may be less durable and more prone to wear and tear, resulting in homes that need repairs and renovations sooner than they should.

Additionally, with the pressure to build homes faster and at a lower cost, many builders cut corners and skimp on important details such as proper insulation installation, air sealing, ventilation, and waterproofing. This leads to increased moisture issues, mold and mildew issues, and structural problems in the long run.

The lack of quality craftsmanship in newer homes not only has a negative impact on the durability and longevity of the home but also on the overall value of the property. Homeowners may find themselves facing unexpected repairs and renovations, which can be costly and time-consuming.

In conclusion, the decline of quality craftsmanship in newer homes is a serious concern that needs to be addressed by builders, contractors, and policymakers. Instead of cutting corners and focusing on short-term profits, builders should prioritize the use of durable materials and construction methods, along with properly trained and educated subcontractors, with  attention to detail and quality control.  With this focus we can provide homes that are built to last.
