Wenatchee Home Inspection-The buzz to all Home Inspectors Real Estate Agents
Hello my fellow home inspectors, real estate agents and associates.
As Home Inspectors, Real Estate agents and associates we tend to see things that many in the general public do not. I wanted to bring to your attention the plight of the American Honey Bee.
I posted a blog on ActiveRain on honey bees “Chelan Home inspection- What’s the Buzz, Honey!” (September of 2010).
Since then I have actually received several calls from people who have honey bees in their homes or too close to them. The do not want to kill them so I have been putting them in touch with a local beekeeper that I know.
The Apiary Inspectors of America (AIA) and USDA-ARS Beltsville Honey Bee Lab conducted a survey between September 2008 and April 2009 to estimate colony loses across the country.
They surveyed over 20% of the country’s estimated 2.3 million colonies and found that a total loss of 28.6% of managed honey bee colonies had occurred. This compares to losses of 35.8% and 31.8% recorded respectively in the winters of 2007/2008 and 2006/2007.
They report that while a decrease in total losses is encouraging, the rate of loss still remains unsustainable. The average operational loss increased from 31% in 2007/2008 to 34.2% in the 2008/2009 winter for beekeepers.
My call to all of you– if you come across a bee hive at a home you are inspecting, listing or showing that you talk to the home owners or buyers and give them information and the options of having a professional beekeeper remove the hive versus destroying the hive.
Bees play an extremely important role in the food production in our country and we all can help by being aware of this issue.
