Mt. Stuart… Where did you come from?

Published by Don Hester on

Those of us from the NW know many of the Cascade mountain features that surround us. But, have you ever thought how they all got here?

In comes the mystery of Mt Stuart, a beautiful mountain that frames the north side of the Kittitas Valley and Cle Elum area.

From the history of the Kittitas County-

“The term “Kittitas” has been said to mean everything from white chalk to shale rock to shoal people to land of plenty. Most anthropologists and historians concede that each interpretation has some validity depending upon the particular dialect spoken.”

Now back to Mt Stuart, Mount Stuart according to some geologist is not even from here, but formed offshore around Baja Mexico and floated up to meet up with the newly forming (in geologic terms) Cascade range and uplift.

This make for some fun thinking when you now look at Mt Stuart… you are an “exotic !”.

Below is a video from the “Nick on the Rocks” Series discussing this hypothesis.

Here is another paper that alludes to that Mt Stuart actually started in Baja reagion of Mexico (the Baja British Columbia Hypothesis)

From the Regional tilt of the Mount Stuart batholith, Washington-
“Thus Baja BC would have originated at the latitude of present-day Baja California.”

From A modern Translation Alternitive to the Baja British Columbia hypothesis-

“The Baja British Columbia (Baja B.C.) hypothesis derives primarily from observed discordant paleomagnetic directions of Insular and Intermontane terranes interpreted to indicate
post-mid- Cretaceous northward transport by up to 4000 km with respect to the continental interior.”

In this paper they offer another explanation to how Mt Stuart got here which is a little less exotic-

“No one can live without relationship. You may withdraw into the mountains, become a monk, a sannyasi, wander off into the desert by yourself, but you are related. You cannot escape from that absolute fact. You cannot exist in isolation. “
