Leavenworth and Cle Elum Home and Pest Inspections-  Carpenter Ants and Conducive Wood Debris.

As a home and pest inspection service in Leavenworth  and Cle Elum I report on conducive wood debris and ant potential as well as other wood destroying insects and organisms seems repetitive. It seems that we all want to stack things neatly (or not so neatly) next to our homes. Builders see no harm in a few pieces of wood left behind after the project. In most of my reports I will suggest the removal or movement of wood debris from under or next to a home.

As a structural pest inspector I recommend removal of wood and wood debris because this has one of the greatest potential for the introduction or invitation to wood destroying insects. Ants and wood boring beetles may already be present in the wood and if not they see this as a great new home to inhabit. Wood in damp locations is an invitation to termites and wood rot.

Carpenter Ants grabbing their young

Here are carpenter ants that have taken up residence in a wood pile left over from construction. The wood be inhabited is cedar. These carpenter ants were not very happy when I moved the top layer of wood and discovered their nest. Taking these pictures was tricky because the ants were moving so fast. I had a few trying to take a piece of me with them.

Carpenter ant control can be achieved by chemical application by a pest control operator and the removal of present and potential nesting material. If you use wood as a heating source in the winter I recommend setting up storage away from the home. It may also be advised to have a perimeter application of chemical control if you are in an area that has a high potential for infestation.

As a home and pest inspector serving Leavenworth and CLe Elum I report on conducive wood debris, ant and other WDO’s (wood destroying insects and organisms) not to be a pest but to educate the home owner or buyer on the potential or presence of such situations. Most WDO’s inhabit areas where the home owner will not venture very often. Left unchecked for very long periods of time these small creature can cause an extreme amount of damage.
