Just a pinch… Electrical Cable terminations

Published by Don Hester on

Conductors not properly protected

Sometime you just have to say… why? As a home inspector here in Wenatchee and Chelan I too many poor electrical installations. Some of this is fairly simple to get correct.

But again  maybe not. These are conductors that are going to an air handler. Air handlers vibrate and over time that can cause wear on the conductor insulation.

So here are some codes when it comes to cable terminations.

From the 2014 NEC

314.17 Conductors Entering Boxes, Conduit Bodies, or Fittings

Conductors entering boxes, conduit bodies, or fittings shall be protected from abrasion and shall comply with 314.17(A) through (D).

(B) Metal Boxes and Conduit Bodies.

Where metal boxes or conduit bodies are installed with messenger-supported wiring, open wiring on insulators, or concealed knob-and-tube wiring, conductors shall enter through insulating bushings or, in dry locations, through flexible tubing extending from the last insulating support to not less than 6 mm (¼ in.) inside the box and beyond any cable clamps. Except as provided in 300.15(C), the wiring shall be firmly secured to the box or conduit body. Where raceway or cable is installed with metal boxes or conduit bodies, the raceway or cable shall be secured to such boxes and conduit bodies.

Most read this as per NEC 314.17  The outer jacket of type NM cable needs to be secured to the box and extend into the box at least ¼ inch.

312.5 Cabinets, Cutout Boxes, and Meter Socket Enclosures

Conductors entering enclosures within the scope of this article shall be protected from abrasion and shall comply with 312.5(A) through (C).

(C) Cables.
Where cable is used, each cable shall be secured to the cabinet, cutout box, or meter socket enclosure.

All cables must be secured to the enclosure with fittings designed and listed for the cable  see 312.5(C). See 300.12 and 300.15.

Cable clamps or cable connectors must be used with only one cable, unless that clamp or fitting is identified for more than one cable.

There are some exception but they do not apply here.

When it comes to electrical installation they should be performed professionally and to the code adopted at the time of installation or modification if required.
