Abandoned cabling in crawlspace

Often in home people will do upgrades to the electrical system. Any upgrade needs to be performed to the code and code cycle for safety and durability. Have live cables or wiring in crawlspace present a hazard for people in crawlspace. All cables and wires need to be properly installed, secured and terminated.

So lets jump into the code on a few issues here.

Per the 2017 NEC-  (Bold and Underline Mine)

300.15 Boxes, Conduit Bodies, or Fittings — Where Required.

A box shall be installed at each outlet and switch point for concealed knob-and-tube wiring.

Fittings and connectors shall be used only with the specific wiring methods for which they are designed and listed.

Where the wiring method is conduit, tubing. Type AC cable. Type MC cable. Type MI cable, non-metallic sheathed cable, or other cables, a box or conduit body shall be installed at each conductor splice point, outlet point, switch point, junction point, termination point, or pull point, unless otherwise permitted in 300.15(A) through (L).

As you can see this  cable was not properly terminated.

Next we have some basic installation issues.

From the 2014 NEC and  Handbook

334.15(C) In Unfinished Basements and Crawl Spaces.

Where cable is run at angles with joists in unfinished basements and crawl spaces, it shall be permissible to secure cables not smaller than two 6 AWG or three 8 AWG conductors directly to the lower edges of the joists. Smaller cables shall be run either through bored holes in joists or on running boards. Nonmetallic-sheathed cable installed on the wall of an unfinished basement shall be permitted to be installed in a listed conduit or tubing or shall be protected in accordance with 300.4. Conduit or tubing shall be provided with a suitable insulating bushing or adapter at the point the cable enters the raceway. The sheath of the nonmetallic-sheathed cable shall extend through the conduit or tubing and into the outlet or device box not less than 6 mm (¼ in.). The cable shall be secured within 300 mm (12 in.) of the point where the cable enters the conduit or tubing. Metal conduit, tubing, and metal outlet boxes shall be connected to an equipment grounding conductor complying with the provisions of 250.86 and 250.148.

From the 2014 NEC Handbook-

Crawl spaces pose dangers similar to those of unfinished basements and in some case are more dangerous due to limited height. The means of providing physical protection in crawl spaces and unfinished basements includes specific protection techniques. Where NMC is installed close to the surface in masonry, concrete, or adobe-type construction, physical protection must be afforded to the cable by using steel plate–type protectors as described in 300.4(F).

Nonmetallic-sheathed cables installed in an unfinished basement or crawl space can be run through holes in joists, attached to the side of joists or beams, and installed on running boards as shown on the left side in Exhibit 334.1. Section 300.4(D) requires cables that run parallel to framing members be installed at least 1¼ inches from the nearest edge of studs, joists, or rafters.

Also from the 2014/2017 NEC-

334.30 Securing and Supporting

Nonmetallic-sheathed cable shall be supported and secured by staples, cable ties, straps, hangers, or similar fittings designed and installed so as not to damage the cable, at intervals not exceeding 1.4 m (4½ ft) and within 300 mm (12 in.) of every outlet box, junction box, cabinet, or fitting. Flat cables shall not be stapled on edge.

Sections of cable protected from physical damage by raceway shall not be required to be secured within the raceway.

As you can see we have several issue for just one condition found.

Always refer to a a qualified electrical contractor or electrician when doing electrical installations.
