Copper Pipe Hangers and Galvanic Reaction

Improper hangers used for copper piping. This has a potential for galvanic corrosion though it most likely not happening.

Galvanic corrosion is caused by self-induced current created by electrical potential of two dissimilar metals in contact with an electrolyte. “

Fresh water is typically free of a lot of minerals making it a weak electrolyte as compared to salt water or other electrolytes used, such as in a battery. The issue is that you must use hangers approved for the material being supported.



2015 IPC

308.3 Materials.
Hangers, anchors and supports shall support the piping and the contents of the piping. Hangers and strapping material shall be of approved material that will not promote galvanic action.

2015 UPC

313.2 Material.
Hangers and anchors shall be of sufficient strength to support the weight of the pipe and its contents. Piping shall be isolated from incompatible materials.

2016 California Plumbing Code
