Are you Collected? History of Electrical Code Books

Published by Don Hester on

My NEC Code Collection

Like many out there, we are bit of history buffs. One thing that I started doing was collecting NEC (National Electrical Code) books. I find it fun and interesting to see the changes through time, and there is the challenge of the hunt.

The code fairly well reflects the growing use of electronics, communications and apparatuses in our more modern world. Since I am a home inspector by profession I focus mainly on residential codes but I will dabble into other sections.

So, in book form I have most of the codes in book form from the 40’s to 2011. I have many of the codes in electronic form, the 1920 and many of the 1930’s and the 2014 NEC Handbook. I do have several code handbooks from different eras, these are especially good to have to get more background on the actual meaning of what was written.

I do keep my eye out for earlier editions of the NEC Code books form. I will only buy them if they are not trying break the bank.  Many of the older code books they are asking a bit too much for me as a hobby collector.

Example of code book costs

From a historical standpoint it was around 1913 version of the Electrical Code when they started really organizing the code that would lead us to where we are at today in code development. The unified code now covers all electrical and communication systems.

If you happen to have some older code books please share what you have. If you looking to sell some older code books and are not trying to rob my bank account I would be interested in hearing from you.

If you find any errors or have additional information that would expand on any code, building standards or manufacturer requirements please let me know.
